Entrance to trains

Toronto's Union Train Station.

 

One of Toronto’s historic landmarks that still serves in it’s original designated function. The vaulted ceilings in the main atrium are worth seeing in person, they were built it to last.

Hydro fields 16

Photo of outdoor parking lot against the sun.

 

Patterns and shadows in the sky inspired my to capture this scene. Placing my camera behind the parking sign helped to avoid sun spots.

Faded image

Double exposure photo person on empty pier.

 

Long shadows cast by the evening sun signaled an end to expedition activities. The first exposure was taken at f/11 and the second at f/8. A brisk wind, accompanied by sounds of crashing waves, made for an introspective moment. While sitting on rocks close to the water, with eyes closed, my mind drifted far away.

Victorian distillery

Noticed these odd implements during the Doors Open G & W Distillery tour. They stood out amongst the large industrial machines, scales and coppersmithing tools.  Curious to know what task they performed and how it related to the distilling process.

Palace of purification

Photo taken inside Toronto's R. C. Harris water filtration plant.

 

Doors Open is an initiative by the city of Toronto that provides access to historical or culturally significant sites. This event happens only once a year, and it attracts locals and tourists.

Toronto’s R.C. Harris Water Filtration Plant is a fine example of modern civic architecture. This Art Deco masterpiece was built between 1932-1937, and opened in 1941. Proper sanitation is critical  for maintaining large populations of people in urban environments. Early in the last century cholera outbreaks were common occurrences. The earliest sanitation grates still functioning date back to 1898. Without such public works, the modern city could not exist.

Abandoned Victorian houses (Toronto, ON)

Somewhere in Toronto these abandoned houses await redevelopment. Nestled within a residential community, they mock Toronto’s notoriously high rents, low vacancies and lack of  affordable housing.
